Adult Asthma Prevalence in New Hampshire, 2013

Asthma in New Hampshire

New Hampshire has one of the highest prevalence rates of asthma in the country. In 2013, more than 140,000 New Hampshire residents had asthma. Of these, 45% of adults and 33% of children had asthma that was not well-controlled.

What is public health surveillance?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines public health surveillance as “the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data regarding a health-related event for use in public health action to reduce morbidity and mortality and to improve health.”

Information from public health surveillance systems is used for activities ranging from immediate public health action, program planning and evaluation, or making decisions about where additional health research is needed.

In New Hampshire, the asthma surveillance system includes information about: the proportion of the population with asthma (prevalence), the demographic characteristics of the portion of the population with asthma and the impact of asthma on people, productivity and the health care system (the asthma burden).
